Craig Hoy MSP has called upon the Scottish Government to do more to support the tourism industry in East Lothian following the positive news that North Berwick has been named one of the UK’s top seaside towns to visit.
Craig has submitted a motion in the Scottish Parliament welcoming the Which Survey ranking.
His motion notes that North Berwick and East Lothian are great places to visit and concludes that the tourism industry is vital to the county’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Craig’s motion also called for the Scottish Government to do more to support the tourism industry in East Lothian.
Craig said: “Everyone knows how much East Lothian has to offer as a tourist destination and it’s great to see North Berwick being singled out by the survey. The tourism industry supports thousands of jobs in East Lothian and the industry will play a big part of the recovery as we come out of the pandemic.
He added: “We need more from the Scottish Government to support the industry. During Covid, the UK Government stepped in to support the industry with the furlough scheme and business grants. But if the industry is to grow and thrive then the Scottish Government needs to invest in East Lothian to support tourism and infrastructure. This should include direct support, dualling the A1 south to the border, upgrading the East Coast mainline and a focus on other key connectivity projects.”
