Scottish Conservative Councillors Craig Hoy and Lachlan Bruce have taken part in a series of High Street surgeries to meet local firms as part of their "Support Our Local Businesses" campaign.
The duo spent time this week in Port Seton and Prestonpans, where they discussed the help local businesses need to get back on their feet after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hoy, who is also his party’s candidate for next May’s Holyrood election, also met with Haddington and North Berwick businesses and in this capacity will take part in further street surgeries across the county in the coming days.
He said: “It’s vital that we help fire up local businesses as they will be the engine of our economic recovery in East Lothian. Whether it’s using a local tradesman, shopping or eating locally, or visiting local attractions we can all do our bit to support our local businesses.”
Bruce added: “Thousands of local jobs are at risk as a result of the Covid-19 crisis. As we move into the recovery phase I would encourage everyone to rally round to help local businesses in East Lothian.”
Hoy and Bruce also welcomed measures set out in the Chancellor’s Summer Statement, which included a one-off bonus of £1,000 paid to employers for each furloughed employee who is still employed in January 2021, a huge reduction in VAT from 20% down to 5% on meals, accommodation and admission to attractions to boost tourism and the hospitality sector.
They also welcomed Rishi Sunak's announcement of a new voucher which will give East Lothian diners 50% (up to £10 per person) off their bill when they eat out Monday to Wednesday throughout August.
Hoy added: “This package of support from the UK Government will help businesses and consumers right across East Lothian. It also gives the hospitality sector a much-needed boost over the summer season. I would encourage as many of our cafes, pubs and restaurants to sign up to be part of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme and hope it boosts business and encourages local residents to go out and enjoy a meal with family and friends."
